Indianapolis, Indiana – Severe thunderstorms could move into central Indiana late tonight, bringing the potential for tornadoes, damaging winds, hail and heavy rainfall that may continue through the early Wednesday morning hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, scattered severe storms are expected to begin developing during the late evening hours Tuesday and persist overnight into Wednesday morning as a strong storm system pushes across the region.
The greatest tornado concern stretches from western Indiana toward the Indianapolis metro, including communities such as Lafayette, Kokomo, Muncie and Bloomington. While tornado potential remains limited, forecasters warn that all severe hazards are possible, including damaging wind gusts capable of downing trees and power lines along with large hail.
Heavy rainfall may also become a problem overnight. Some storms could produce intense downpours that lead to localized flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and locations with poor drainage.
Travel conditions could deteriorate along major routes including Interstate 65, Interstate 69, Interstate 70 and Interstate 74, especially late tonight as storms move through the Indianapolis metro area.
Residents are encouraged to monitor weather alerts, ensure phones are charged and have multiple ways to receive warnings before going to sleep tonight.
Another round of severe storms may also develop Wednesday afternoon across southeast portions of central Indiana, meaning additional watches or warnings could be issued as the system moves across the state.
