Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — Severe thunderstorms could develop across western Pennsylvania Wednesday afternoon and evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a passing cold front may trigger storms capable of producing damaging wind gusts and isolated tornadoes across the region.

The Storm Prediction Center has highlighted parts of western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio and northern West Virginia for possible severe weather as the system moves through on Wednesday, March 11.

Forecasters say damaging winds currently appear to be the primary threat, though a few tornadoes cannot be ruled out if stronger storms develop along the cold front.

Cities including Pittsburgh, Butler, Indiana, Wheeling and Morgantown may see thunderstorms as the system moves east during the afternoon and evening hours.

Meteorologists say forecast details could still change as the timing and strength of the storm system become clearer over the next day.

Residents are encouraged to monitor forecasts and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, especially if storms strengthen during the day Wednesday.

For commuters, students and shift workers, storms could affect Wednesday afternoon travel and the evening commute across the Pittsburgh metro area.
