Colorado – Crisp morning air sits over Pueblo, but the calm won’t last long. By midday, wind will sweep across southern Colorado fields while humidity drops sharply, creating conditions where a single spark could ignite fast-moving grass fires.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Red Flag Warning remains active from noon until 7 p.m. today across Pueblo County, El Paso County, Crowley County, and the San Luis Valley. West winds will increase to 10–20 mph with gusts reaching 35 mph. Relative humidity could fall as low as 10 percent, a combination that allows flames to spread quickly across dry grass and brush.

Communities from Colorado Springs to Ordway face the highest concern during the afternoon. Open land near Highway 50 and rural roads east of Pueblo could see rapid fire growth if a blaze starts. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged. Even small sparks from trailers, farm equipment, or discarded cigarettes could ignite dry vegetation.

Drivers should also remain cautious along I-25 and Highway 50 where gusty crosswinds may kick up dust and reduce visibility briefly.

While the fire threat peaks today, warm March air continues to shape the broader pattern. Highs surge into the upper 70s Tuesday before a midweek cool-down arrives Wednesday behind a passing front. Temperatures dip into the 50s briefly before rebounding toward the mid-70s by Thursday, hinting at the early-spring warmth spreading across much of the central United States.

For now, the focus stays on today’s fire risk window. Emergency managers urge residents to secure trailer chains, avoid open flames, and report smoke immediately. Additional advisories could be issued if winds strengthen later this afternoon.

Traveling through southern Colorado today? Keep an eye out for smoke or blowing dust and allow extra time on exposed highways.
