Illinois — Warm March air is already spreading across central Illinois this morning, and the day begins with a growing sense of spring. Clouds drift slowly over Champaign while mild winds sweep across open farmland near Interstate 57.
Temperatures will climb quickly today, reaching around 72°F this afternoon. Southwest winds may gust near 25 to 30 mph, adding a breezy feel across the region.
Drivers along I-57, I-72, and US-45 should expect smooth travel conditions through the morning and midday hours. Roads remain dry, and visibility stays excellent under partly sunny skies.
The warm stretch continues Tuesday, when temperatures could surge to near 78°F across the Champaign area. However, meteorologists are now tracking a developing storm system moving toward Illinois.
Scattered thunderstorms may begin forming Tuesday afternoon, but the more organized storms are expected Tuesday night. Periods of heavy rain and lightning could develop as the system strengthens.
Some storms may produce gusty winds and brief downpours, which could slow travel across central Illinois highways. Wet pavement and reduced visibility are likely during heavier rainfall.
The unsettled weather continues Wednesday, March 11, when widespread showers remain possible through much of the day. Breezy conditions may also develop as colder air begins pushing into Illinois.
Temperatures will fall quickly Wednesday afternoon, dropping toward the upper 40s before colder air settles in during the evening. As readings approach freezing, a brief rain-to-snow mix cannot be ruled out late Wednesday night.
While significant accumulation appears unlikely, colder air could create isolated slick spots on bridges early Thursday morning.
Skies begin clearing Thursday as cooler March air settles across the region.
