PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Spring-like temperatures near 70 degrees are expected this week before rain and possible snow return by Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service Pittsburgh office, a weak line of light showers moved across the region early Sunday morning as a front passed through western Pennsylvania. Forecasters say clouds should gradually clear later Sunday, allowing for partial sunshine through the afternoon.

The clearing pattern is expected to continue into the start of the workweek. Monday is forecast to bring sunny skies across the Pittsburgh region with temperatures climbing into the 60s, well above the seasonal averages for early March.

Conditions remain warm into Tuesday, when temperatures could reach the upper 60s to near 70 degrees in parts of western Pennsylvania. The National Weather Service notes the typical average high for this time of year is about 46 degrees, while the average low is near 28 degrees.

A midweek weather system is expected to change the pattern. Rain and possible thunderstorms may develop Wednesday as a cold front approaches the region. High temperatures could still reach the 70s ahead of the front.

Behind the system, significantly cooler air is expected to move in late Wednesday into Thursday. Forecast guidance suggests rain may mix with or change to snow as temperatures drop sharply, with highs falling into the 30s and 40s by Thursday.

The late-week cooldown could also bring a return to more seasonable March conditions after several days of above-average warmth.

The shift may be noticeable for commuters and students heading out later in the week as conditions transition quickly from spring-like warmth to colder, potentially wintry weather.
