Beckley, West Virginia – A man is facing drug charges after deputies responding to an unresponsive driver report discovered cocaine and fentanyl inside a vehicle.
According to the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office, Cpl. B. Garrett responded Wednesday, March 4, to the 2100 block of Harper Road following a report of a male unresponsive in the driver’s seat of a vehicle.
During the investigation, deputies identified the man as David Matthew White.
Authorities said Cpl. Garrett deployed his K-9 partner, Red, during the investigation. The K-9 allegedly alerted to the presence of narcotics in the vehicle, prompting a search by deputies.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies located 5.4 grams of cocaine and 1.66 grams of fentanyl inside the vehicle.
White was subsequently charged with possession with intent to deliver, authorities said.
Sheriff Frank Priddy said the case resulted from a coordinated response and credited the deputies involved in the investigation.
Priddy and Chief Deputy Frankie Shelton also thanked Cpl. B. Garrett and Deputy J. Eller for what the department described as a thorough response to the incident.
The investigation originated from a welfare check call involving the reportedly unresponsive driver, though officials did not release additional details about the driver’s condition.
Drug seizures involving fentanyl continue to raise safety concerns for law enforcement and communities due to the substance’s high potency and overdose risk.
Incidents like this can also affect daily commuters and workers traveling along Harper Road, one of Beckley’s frequently used corridors.
The case remains subject to court proceedings.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
