Sioux Falls, South Dakota — Slippery road conditions continue across parts of the northern Plains early Saturday as freezing precipitation leaves ice and snow on highways.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, much of the freezing drizzle, rain, and snow that affected the region overnight has moved east of Highway 71, but many roads remain hazardous.
Transportation reports indicate that several highways and secondary roads across eastern South Dakota, northwest Iowa, southwest Minnesota, and northeast Nebraska remain partially or completely covered with snow and ice.
Road condition maps released around 5:55 a.m. Saturday show widespread slick conditions across the region, particularly along rural highways and state routes.
Officials warn that even where precipitation has ended, icy surfaces may linger through the morning hours, creating dangerous travel conditions.
Drivers are advised to slow down, allow extra following distance, and plan for longer travel times if heading out early Saturday.
Motorists can also check state 511 travel systems for real-time road condition updates before traveling.
For early-morning commuters, students, and weekend travelers across the Sioux Falls region, slick roads may continue to affect travel until temperatures rise and road crews treat affected highways.
