Norfolk, Nebraska — Slick and icy road conditions were reported across parts of northeast Nebraska early Saturday, creating hazardous travel conditions for morning drivers.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, much of the region is experiencing icy or snow-covered roads, particularly where moisture from rainfall late Friday night froze overnight.

Forecasters warn that any surface that appears wet may actually be icy, especially on bridges, untreated roads, and rural highways.

The most affected areas include communities near Norfolk, O’Neill, Albion, Columbus, and surrounding portions of northeast Nebraska, where road condition reports indicated icy patches early Saturday morning.

Meteorologists say conditions may temporarily worsen before improving, as additional wet spots freeze during the early morning hours.

However, temperatures are expected to rise above freezing by around 10 a.m., which should gradually improve road conditions across the region.

Drivers are urged to slow down and allow extra stopping distance, particularly on less-traveled roads where ice may linger longer.

Commuters, early-morning workers, and weekend travelers may encounter patchy ice and slippery intersections before conditions improve later in the morning.

Officials recommend using caution on any road that appears wet, as black ice may be difficult to see in low morning light.
