Indianapolis, Indiana — Minor to moderate river flooding is continuing along portions of the East Fork White River and the lower White River, prompting safety warnings across several southern and central Indiana communities.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, flooding is expected to persist or develop along the East Fork White River, the lower White River, and nearby tributaries as elevated water levels continue moving downstream.
Forecasters say some headwater locations may crest within the next few days, while communities farther downstream may not see peak river levels until at least the middle of next week.
Forecast maps show several stretches of river in moderate flood stage, including areas near Bloomington, Seymour, Vincennes, and Jasper, while other sections remain in minor flood stage.
Additional rounds of rain expected through the weekend and into next week could extend the duration of flooding or worsen conditions in some areas, according to meteorologists.
Officials are urging residents to remain cautious around swollen rivers and flooded roadways.
The National Weather Service emphasized the importance of the safety rule “Turn Around, Don’t Drown,” warning drivers not to attempt to cross flooded roads.
Even shallow moving water can sweep vehicles off the roadway.
Residents can monitor river levels and forecast crest information for specific locations through the National Water Prediction Service at water.noaa.gov.
Commuters, students, and residents traveling near rivers or low-lying roads may encounter temporary road closures or standing water in flood-prone areas as river levels fluctuate through the coming days.
