Maine — A thin glaze of ice may already be forming across parts of northern Maine this morning as freezing rain begins to fall across the Caribou region. Roads that looked dry earlier could quickly turn slick.

Temperatures sit near 26 degrees in Caribou early this morning, cold enough for rain to freeze on contact. Light precipitation will continue through the morning hours as warmer air slowly pushes north.

The National Weather Service in Caribou has issued a Winter Weather Advisory through early afternoon. Ice accumulation may reach one-tenth of an inch, enough to coat bridges, untreated roads, and sidewalks.

Drivers across U.S. Route 1, Route 11, and local roads through Aroostook County should slow down. Even a light ice layer can make braking difficult.

Rain should gradually transition to plain rain later today as temperatures climb toward 43 degrees. However, the morning commute and early travel hours remain the most hazardous.

Patchy fog may also develop after the rain arrives. Wet pavement and low visibility could continue slowing traffic through midday.

Conditions improve Sunday, although scattered showers may linger across northern Maine. Highs reach the mid-40s, which is slightly above normal for early March.

Early next week brings a brief break in active weather. Skies clear Monday with highs near 49 degrees in the Caribou area. Sunshine continues Tuesday with temperatures in the mid-40s.

Meteorologists are also tracking another system by midweek that could bring snow back to northern Maine, especially Wednesday.

And don’t forget the Daylight Saving Time change early Sunday morning. Clocks move ahead one hour at 2 a.m., bringing longer daylight during the evening commute.

Early March often brings these rapid swings between winter and spring across Maine.
