Virginia – Headlights glow through a blanket of gray this morning as dense fog settles across Annandale and much of Northern Virginia. Visibility dips along neighborhood streets and major highways while drivers ease onto the Capital Beltway.

Conditions are especially murky along Interstate 495, I-66, and Route 50, where pockets of fog reduce visibility early in the morning. The damp air and calm winds allow the fog to linger through the early commute before gradual clearing begins late morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, widespread dense fog will persist through mid-morning across Fairfax County and surrounding parts of northern Virginia and Maryland. Temperatures are hovering near 43 degrees, with humidity above 90 percent helping the thick fog hold in place.

Drivers should slow down and allow extra following distance. Low-beam headlights improve visibility in fog. Sudden drops in visibility are possible near creeks, wooded areas, and the Potomac River basin.

Clouds gradually thin later today, allowing partial sunshine and warmer air to take over. Afternoon temperatures climb toward the upper 60s across Annandale and the D.C. suburbs, offering a milder feel for early March.

Rain chances return later tonight into early Sunday as a weak system moves through the Mid-Atlantic. Showers may briefly dampen roads again before skies clear heading into the new week.

Then the warming trend accelerates. Monday brings sunshine and highs near 72 degrees, followed by near-80 degree warmth by Tuesday across much of Northern Virginia.

Residents should also remember the Daylight Saving Time change early Sunday morning, when clocks move ahead one hour at 2 a.m. Longer daylight evenings arrive just as spring warmth builds.

Meteorologists say the broader pattern favors above-normal temperatures across the eastern United States through midweek.
