Augusta, Maine – A thin layer of ice is developing across western Maine and parts of New Hampshire early Saturday as freezing drizzle and light freezing rain settle over the region before sunrise.

According to the National Weather Service in Gray, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. EST Saturday for much of western and central Maine, including Augusta, Lewiston, Waterville, Skowhegan, Rangeley, and Bethel. Ice accumulation is expected to remain below one-tenth of an inch, but even a light glaze can quickly make untreated roads dangerous.

Across southern and central New Hampshire, including Manchester, Concord, Nashua, Dover, and Rochester, a similar advisory continues until 5 a.m. Saturday as pockets of freezing drizzle coat bridges and sidewalks.

The greatest impacts are expected on secondary roads, rural routes, and elevated surfaces such as bridges along Interstate 93 in New Hampshire and Interstate 95 and Route 201 corridors in Maine.

Transportation officials warn drivers to reduce speeds and allow extra braking distance during the early morning hours. Sidewalks, parking lots, and stairs may also become slick, increasing the risk of falls.

Freezing drizzle should gradually taper after sunrise, but slippery spots may linger through the mid-morning hours. Travelers are encouraged to check NewEngland511.org for the latest road conditions as additional advisories remain possible if icing persists.
