Sioux Falls, SD — Mixed precipitation moving across eastern South Dakota and nearby areas could create icy roads Friday evening before changing to snow overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, precipitation will continue expanding across the region Friday afternoon and evening, beginning as drizzle or mixed precipitation before transitioning to mainly snow after midnight.
Forecasters say ice accumulations between a glaze and about 0.2 inches remain possible in parts of the region, which could create slick roads, sidewalks and driveways.
Snowfall totals are expected to remain relatively light, generally from a trace up to about 1 inch, with the highest totals across central and south-central South Dakota.
The system is expected to move through in stages:
- Friday evening: Mixed precipitation develops
- Late Friday night: Transition to mostly snow
- Saturday morning: Snow tapers off as conditions improve
The Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect across much of the region through Saturday morning, covering areas including Sioux Falls, Mitchell, Brookings, Yankton and surrounding communities.
Even with lighter snowfall amounts, ice accumulation may create slower travel and slippery road conditions, particularly overnight and early Saturday.
Early morning commuters, students and weekend travelers across eastern South Dakota and nearby northwest Iowa may want to allow extra travel time and watch for icy conditions.
