Omaha, Nebraska – Rain is expected to transition to a wintry mix across parts of Nebraska Friday evening as a strong cold front moves through the region, bringing the potential for snow and icy conditions overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, temperatures will quickly drop below freezing, allowing rain to change over to freezing rain, sleet, and eventually snow in some areas.
The greatest chances for accumulating winter precipitation will be across northeast Nebraska, including areas near Norfolk, Tekamah, and the Nebraska–South Dakota border.
Forecasters say precipitation will linger across northeast Nebraska into the evening, with cooler air arriving shortly afterward.
As temperatures fall into the upper 20s to low 30s, rain may initially change to a light freezing rain or wintry mix before transitioning to snow later tonight.
Most areas are expected to see only light accumulations, with a trace up to about half an inch of snow possible.
However, some locations near the Nebraska–South Dakota border could see snow totals approaching one inch.
Ice accumulation may also occur in some areas as freezing rain develops.
Even small amounts of ice can create hazardous conditions, potentially turning roads, bridges, and sidewalks slick.
Because of this, travel conditions could deteriorate quickly during the evening and overnight hours, particularly in areas that experience freezing rain.
Meteorologists say drivers should use caution if traveling tonight, especially across northeast Nebraska where wintry precipitation is most likely.
Officials recommend allowing extra travel time and remaining alert for rapidly changing road conditions.
Residents are encouraged to monitor the latest forecasts and road condition updates, as temperatures and precipitation type could shift as the system moves through.
