Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania – Drivers across the southern Poconos are encountering slick roads Friday morning as freezing drizzle coats surfaces with a thin layer of ice during the early commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. EST Friday for Monroe County, including the Stroudsburg area and surrounding higher elevations of the Pocono Mountains.
Forecasters say freezing drizzle is producing a light glaze of ice, especially on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses where temperatures remain below freezing. Even minor icing can quickly create hazardous travel conditions across mountain terrain and shaded roadways.
The icing threat is most noticeable across elevated routes and rural roads throughout the county. Slippery sidewalks, driveways, and parking lots are also possible as the glaze develops through the morning hours.
Officials urge drivers to reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance, and remain cautious when approaching intersections or elevated surfaces where ice forms first.
Pedestrians should also watch their footing when stepping onto outdoor surfaces, particularly stairs and untreated walkways.
Conditions should gradually improve by late morning as temperatures rise and the freezing drizzle tapers off, though isolated slick spots could linger beyond the advisory period. Additional travel updates are available through Pennsylvania 511 road conditions.
