Austin, Texas – Thunderstorms are possible across parts of Central and South Texas Friday, with a greater chance for stronger storms developing later this weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Austin-San Antonio, isolated thunderstorms could develop Friday afternoon and evening, with a low-end severe weather risk across portions of the region.

If storms form Friday, hazards could include large hail, damaging wind gusts, and frequent lightning, particularly during the mid-afternoon through evening hours.

Cities including Austin, San Antonio, San Marcos, New Braunfels, and Georgetown could see isolated storms as moisture and instability increase across Central Texas.

Motorists traveling along major routes such as Interstate 35, Interstate 10, and U.S. Highway 290 may encounter brief heavy downpours, lightning, and reduced visibility during stronger storms.

The severe weather risk is expected to increase Saturday and Saturday night, when a stronger system moves into the region.

Forecasters say showers and thunderstorms will become more widespread, with the potential for locally heavy rainfall, damaging wind gusts, and large hail.

Current outlooks place much of Central Texas under a Level 2 out of 5 severe weather risk for Saturday, indicating scattered severe storms could develop.

Heavy rainfall may also lead to localized flooding in low-lying or poor drainage areas, especially where storms repeatedly move over the same locations.

High temperatures Friday are expected to reach the upper 70s to low 80s, with warm and humid conditions continuing into the weekend.

Residents across Central and South Texas are encouraged to stay weather aware, monitor forecast updates, and have multiple ways to receive severe weather warnings, particularly heading into Saturday evening.
