Albany, New York – A mix of freezing rain, sleet, and light snow is creating slick roads across eastern New York and parts of New England early Friday, threatening the morning commute in the Capital Region and surrounding mountain areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until noon EST Friday for much of eastern New York, including Albany, Schenectady, Troy, Saratoga Springs, Glens Falls, and the Mohawk Valley, as well as portions of western Massachusetts, northwest Connecticut, and southern Vermont.
Ice accumulations of around 0.10 inches are expected, with up to 0.20 inches possible in higher elevations such as the Berkshires, northern Taconics, and eastern Catskills. Some areas may also see less than one inch of snow or sleet mixed with freezing rain.
Roadways including Interstate 87, Interstate 90, and Interstate 88 could develop slick spots, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and untreated surfaces.
Communities in the Hudson Valley and Catskills, including Catskill, Hudson, Cairo, and Pine Plains, may see rain change to freezing rain early Friday before tapering off later in the morning.
Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and watch for icy patches. Sidewalks and driveways may also become hazardous.
Conditions should gradually improve late Friday morning as temperatures rise and precipitation moves out, though some slick spots may linger in higher elevations.
