Pocatello, Idaho – Snowfall continuing through the evening could leave mountain roads across the Bear River Range slick and hazardous for overnight travelers heading across high passes near the Utah border.

According to the National Weather Service in Pocatello, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 2 a.m. Friday for the Bear River Range, including Emigration Summit. Additional snowfall of 3 to 6 inches is expected before the system tapers early Friday morning.

The snow will primarily impact higher elevations where colder temperatures allow steady accumulation on road surfaces. Mountain routes crossing the Bear River Range, including areas near Emigration Summit along U.S. Highway 89, may experience snow-packed pavement and reduced traction through the night.

Drivers traveling through southeastern Idaho’s mountain corridors should prepare for slick road conditions and reduced visibility, especially on curves and shaded stretches where snow can accumulate quickly. Transportation officials recommend slowing down and increasing following distance while traveling through mountain passes.

Motorists can check the latest road and pass conditions by calling 511 or visiting 511.idaho.gov before heading into higher elevations.

Snowfall is expected to taper shortly after 2 a.m. Friday, though lingering slick spots may remain on untreated mountain roads into the early morning hours.
