Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Roads across southeast South Dakota could turn icy within hours Friday afternoon as freezing precipitation develops, threatening hazardous travel across the Sioux Falls metro before the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 3 p.m. Friday until 9 a.m. Saturday for Brookings, Lake, Moody, McCook, Minnehaha, and Lincoln counties, including Sioux Falls, Brookings, Madison, Harrisburg, and Canton. The system is expected to produce up to 0.1 inches of ice with light snow totals near 1 inch, while wind gusts could reach 35 mph.
The initial wave of precipitation Friday afternoon may begin as rain before quickly transitioning to freezing rain and light snow during the evening hours, coating roads, bridges, and overpasses. Slick travel could develop along Interstate 29, Interstate 90 near Sioux Falls, and U.S. Highway 14 near Brookings.
A second advisory area beginning 6 p.m. Friday covers northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota, including Worthington, Marshall, Spirit Lake, and Rock Rapids. Those areas could see ice accumulations approaching 0.2 inches, increasing the risk of dangerous road conditions overnight.
Drivers are urged to slow down and check 511 road condition services before traveling. Sidewalks, parking lots, and untreated roads may become extremely slick.
The icy mix could linger into the Saturday morning commute, with additional travel alerts possible if freezing precipitation lasts longer than expected.
