Cheyenne, Wyoming – Drivers crossing the Interstate 80 summit between Cheyenne and Laramie could face slick pavement and blowing snow by midnight tonight as a winter storm targets the South Laramie Range.

According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, a Winter Storm Warning takes effect at midnight and remains in place until midnight Friday night for the South Laramie Range, including Vedauwoo, Buford, and Pumpkin Vine. Forecasters expect 4 to 7 inches of snow with wind gusts reaching 40 mph, conditions capable of rapidly reducing visibility across high-elevation travel corridors.

The greatest impacts are expected along the I-80 Summit, a stretch already known for sudden weather shifts and difficult winter driving. Snowfall combined with gusty winds may create blowing snow and slick bridges or overpasses, especially during the Friday morning and evening travel periods.

State transportation crews typically monitor this corridor closely because drifting snow can quickly accumulate along exposed portions of the highway. Drivers should anticipate reduced speeds, possible delays, and hazardous traction, particularly overnight and through Friday.

Anyone traveling through the South Laramie Range should pack emergency supplies such as food, water, and a flashlight and check Wyoming road conditions by dialing 511 before departure.

Snow and wind are expected to continue through late Friday night, and additional travel advisories could follow if conditions worsen along the I-80 corridor.
