Chicago, Illinois – Drivers across northern Illinois could face rapidly changing conditions by Friday morning as thunderstorms develop and move across the region, bringing the potential for hail, gusty winds, and lightning.

The first round of storms is expected to arrive by mid-morning Friday, with the greatest coverage across northern Illinois communities including Chicago, Rockford, Elgin, and Waukegan. These early storms may produce hail and gusty wind bursts, creating hazardous travel conditions along major corridors such as Interstate 90, Interstate 94, and Interstate 55.

According to the National Weather Service, thunderstorms will likely move from southwest to northeast through the region during the morning hours. While these storms should gradually shift north of the area by midday, additional development later in the day remains possible.

Weather conditions during the late afternoon and evening Friday will determine whether a second round of storms forms ahead of an approaching cold front. If storms redevelop, they could become stronger with damaging wind gusts capable of downing tree limbs and producing isolated power outages across parts of northern Illinois.

Travel impacts could be most noticeable along Interstate 290 through the western Chicago suburbs, Interstate 80 near Joliet, and Interstate 90 stretching toward Rockford, where bursts of heavy rain and lightning may briefly reduce visibility.

Not every community will see severe weather Friday afternoon, but meteorologists say the atmosphere will remain unstable enough to support stronger storms if they form.

Residents are encouraged to keep mobile weather alerts enabled and check forecasts throughout the day Friday. Additional storms may develop late Friday night as a cold front approaches, bringing another round of rainfall before conditions gradually improve into the weekend.
