Springfield, Illinois – Drivers across central Illinois could face dangerous travel conditions by Friday night as strong thunderstorms capable of 70 mph wind gusts and large hail develop along a cold front moving across the region, potentially impacting major highways including I-55, I-72, I-57, and I-74.

Warm and humid air surging north ahead of the front will push temperatures well above normal during the day Friday. Afternoon highs across cities including Springfield, Peoria, Bloomington, and Champaign are expected to climb into the mid to upper 70s, creating an unstable atmosphere capable of supporting severe thunderstorms.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, storms are expected to develop Friday evening ahead of the advancing cold front. Some of these storms may become severe, producing damaging wind gusts near 70 mph, hail around 1 inch in diameter, and heavy downpours that could significantly reduce visibility.

Communities along the I-55 corridor between Springfield and Bloomington may see storms develop or intensify during the evening hours. Strong winds could blow debris onto roads and create hazardous conditions for high-profile vehicles.

Farther north and east, storms tracking across Peoria, Champaign, and Decatur could affect travel along I-74 and I-57, where heavy rainfall may quickly create slick pavement and standing water during peak evening travel hours.

Motorists should prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions Friday evening and monitor weather alerts before traveling. Residents are also encouraged to secure outdoor items and ensure multiple ways to receive weather warnings.

The strongest storms are expected Friday night before gradually weakening overnight as the cold front pushes east across Illinois, though scattered showers may linger into early Saturday.
