Paducah, Kentucky – Strong to severe thunderstorms will sweep across western Kentucky and the surrounding region through 8 p.m. Wednesday, threatening wind gusts up to 60 mph along I-24 and US-60 during the late afternoon and evening drive. Residents should be ready to move indoors quickly as storms intensify.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, clusters and line segments of thunderstorms are expected to move through the area this afternoon and evening. The primary hazards include large hail and damaging winds, and a brief tornado or two cannot be ruled out, especially in southeast Missouri and far western Kentucky. The most active severe window runs from roughly 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., though additional non-severe storms may linger later tonight.
Communities including Paducah, Mayfield, and Murray face the potential for intense wind bursts capable of downing tree limbs and causing isolated power outages. Along I-24, I-55 near Cape Girardeau, and I-69 toward Evansville, drivers could encounter sudden heavy downpours that reduce visibility and create ponding on roadways. Hail up to around 1 inch in diameter may dent vehicles left exposed.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items and ensure weather alerts are enabled on mobile devices. If a warning is issued, move to an interior room away from windows.
The severe threat should diminish after 8 p.m., but additional warnings may be issued if storms strengthen before exiting the region.
