Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Thunderstorm chances will increase late Thursday night into Friday, with isolated severe storms possible across parts of southeast South Dakota, northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota.
The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls reports moisture surging northward Thursday night will support developing showers and thunderstorms. A few storms could produce dime to quarter-size hail and wind gusts near 50 mph.
The highest local risk Thursday night is concentrated along and east of Interstate 29, including areas near Sioux Falls, Spencer and Storm Lake. The primary window for stronger storms is between midnight and 7 a.m.
Additional storms may redevelop Friday, with the risk shifting farther east and south. Isolated to scattered severe storms will be possible, with damaging wind and hail as the main threats. Confidence in Friday’s coverage remains lower than Thursday night.
Residents are encouraged to have multiple ways to receive warnings, especially overnight when storms may develop while many are sleeping.
For early morning commuters and students, changing weather conditions could impact travel at daybreak Friday.
