Kansas City, MO – Severe thunderstorms are set to intensify across Missouri and Iowa by late Friday afternoon, with a growing tornado threat developing near major interstates before the evening commute and continuing overnight.

According to the National Weather Service and NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center, atmospheric instability will surge across northern Missouri into southern and central Iowa by 4 p.m. Friday. Supercell thunderstorms are expected to form ahead of a strengthening cold front, capable of producing wind gusts up to 80 mph, hail larger than 2 inches and isolated tornadoes.

In Missouri, the highest concern centers on Kansas City, Columbia and Kirksville, particularly along I-70, US-63 and Highway 36 between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Storms may move northeast at 45 to 55 mph, reducing visibility to less than one mile in heavy rain and creating sudden hazardous travel conditions.

As the system pushes north, Des Moines and communities along I-35 and I-80 face an increasing tornado risk through late evening. Farther east, Davenport and the Quad Cities along I-74 could see severe storms approach before or shortly after midnight. Power outages are possible where stronger rotating cells track over populated areas.

Residents should secure loose outdoor objects immediately and review tornado shelter plans. Identify a lowest-level interior room away from windows and ensure multiple ways to receive warnings, especially overnight.

The tornado threat will persist through early Saturday morning, and additional watches and warnings are likely as storms rapidly strengthen Friday evening.
