Shreveport, Louisiana – Drivers across the ArkLaTex should prepare now as strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to erupt this afternoon and evening, threatening Interstate 20 with wind gusts up to 70 mph and large hail capable of damaging vehicles.

According to the National Weather Service in Shreveport, storms will develop during the afternoon and intensify into the evening across portions of northeast Texas, southeast Oklahoma and southwest Arkansas. The primary hazards include damaging wind gusts and large hail, potentially up to golf ball size. A tornado or two cannot be ruled out as storms organize.

The highest impacts are expected near and northwest of Shreveport, including Longview, Texarkana and El Dorado. Travel along I-20, I-30 and I-49 may become hazardous as storms move from southwest to northeast. Sudden downpours could reduce visibility quickly, while strong outflow winds may create dangerous crosswinds for high-profile vehicles.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items before storms develop and ensure they have multiple ways to receive warnings. If a warning is issued, move indoors immediately and stay away from windows. Those in mobile homes should identify a sturdier shelter location ahead of time.

Storms may linger into the overnight hours before gradually shifting east. Additional watches or warnings could be issued with little notice as conditions intensify late this afternoon and evening.
