Lincoln, IL– Drivers across central and southeast Illinois will contend with repeated rounds of rain through the end of the work week, with pockets of heavier downpours and a few strong thunderstorms possible by Wednesday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Central Illinois, periods of rain will continue statewide through Friday, with the greatest risk for stronger storms focused on southeast Illinois Wednesday afternoon and again Friday night into Saturday. Most communities will see steady, beneficial rainfall, but isolated thunderstorms could produce gusty winds and brief heavy rainfall.
In central Illinois, including Springfield, Bloomington, Peoria and Lincoln, showers will move through in waves tonight and Wednesday, keeping roads wet during the morning and evening commutes. Lows will dip into the upper 30s to mid-40s tonight before highs climb into the upper 50s and lower 60s Wednesday. Southeast Illinois communities such as Effingham, Olney and Lawrenceville face a higher chance for stronger storms midweek.
Scattered showers and storms redevelop Thursday morning, with temperatures rising into the mid-60s. By Friday, warmer air pushes highs into the mid-70s, fueling another round of thunderstorms late in the day and into Saturday.
