Paducah, Kentucky – Strong thunderstorms could disrupt travel and outdoor plans across western Kentucky by Wednesday afternoon as a more active summer pattern settles over the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, scattered showers and isolated storms will develop across northern portions of the state Tuesday before expanding in coverage Wednesday and Thursday. A few storms could become severe Wednesday afternoon and evening, especially across western Kentucky and parts of southern Illinois and southeast Missouri.

Temperatures are climbing into the 70s across much of the region, adding fuel for stronger cells capable of gusty winds and brief downpours. Drivers along Interstate 24, the Purchase Parkway and U.S. 60 near Paducah could encounter reduced visibility during heavier rain. Localized ponding on roads is possible where storms repeatedly track over the same areas.

Emergency managers urge residents to secure loose outdoor items and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Charge mobile devices ahead of Wednesday afternoon and avoid non-essential travel during any severe thunderstorm warnings.

The unsettled pattern is expected to linger into the weekend and early next week, with additional advisories possible if stronger storms redevelop.
