Albany, N.Y. – Snow will begin coating roadways across eastern New York by late morning Tuesday, with slick travel developing on I-87 and I-90 before the afternoon commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 9 a.m. Tuesday until between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. Wednesday for portions of the Mohawk Valley, eastern Catskills, Berkshires and southern Vermont. Snowfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are expected, along with a light glaze of ice ranging from 0.01 to 0.15 inches in some areas.
The Albany metro area, including Colonie and Guilderland, could see snow mix with sleet or freezing rain at times this afternoon into early tonight. Even minor ice accumulation can make bridges and overpasses along I-787 and Route 7 slick. Farther south toward the eastern Catskills and north into the southern Adirondacks, snow may remain steadier through early evening.
Drivers along I-88 toward Cobleskill and I-90 east toward Pittsfield should plan for reduced visibility during periods of steadier precipitation. Untreated secondary roads and elevated surfaces will become slippery first as temperatures hover near freezing.
Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance and check road conditions before traveling Tuesday afternoon and evening. Keep headlights on during precipitation and use caution on exit ramps.
Precipitation tapers off from south to north overnight, with improving travel conditions by daybreak Wednesday. Additional advisories may be issued if snowfall or icing becomes more widespread than currently expected.
