Cleveland, Ohio – Roads and overpasses across northeast Ohio are turning slick right now as freezing rain creates a light glaze on I-90, I-77 and I-271 ahead of the Tuesday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, freezing rain is expected through 10 a.m. Tuesday, with ice accumulations up to 0.05 inches possible across parts of northeast Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania. Even a few hundredths of an inch of ice can make untreated roads, bridges and sidewalks hazardous.
The highest travel impact stretches from Cleveland east toward Ashtabula along I-90, and south through Akron along I-77. Elevated surfaces, including ramps on I-480 and Route 2, will freeze first as pavement temperatures hover near 32 degrees. In Geauga, Lake and Ashtabula counties, a thin glaze may coat parking lots and secondary roads before mid-morning.
Farther east into northwest Pennsylvania, including Erie and Meadville, similar icing totals could create slippery conditions on I-79 and I-90. School districts and local agencies are monitoring road conditions as visibility remains steady but surfaces become slick.
ODOT crews are treating major highways, but drivers should slow down, increase following distance and avoid sudden braking. Use caution on untreated side streets and allow extra time for the commute.
Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing late Tuesday morning, changing precipitation to rain and gradually improving road conditions. The winter weather advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m., and additional updates may be issued if icing lingers longer than anticipated.
