Dodge City, Kan. – Visibility has dropped to a quarter mile or less across western Kansas early Tuesday, creating dangerous driving conditions right now on US-50, US-283 and US-54.

According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect for western and central Kansas until 12 p.m. CST Tuesday. Widespread dense fog has developed overnight, reducing visibility to 0.25 mile or lower in many communities, including Dodge City, Garden City, Liberal and Hays.

Travel along US-83, K-96 and US-56 may become especially hazardous through mid-morning. In some rural areas, visibility could briefly fall below a quarter mile, making it difficult to see stop signs, intersections and slow-moving farm equipment. School bus routes and early freight traffic face the highest risk before 9 a.m.

The fog extends east toward Pratt, Great Bend and portions of central Kansas, affecting key corridors that connect to I-70. Law enforcement agencies report fluctuating visibility, with conditions changing rapidly over short distances.

Drivers should reduce speeds immediately, use low-beam headlights and avoid high beams, which can reflect off fog and worsen visibility. Increase following distance to at least five seconds and remain alert for sudden slowdowns.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve late Tuesday morning as daytime heating helps lift the fog. Visibility should steadily recover toward midday, but patchy dense fog may linger in low-lying areas until the advisory expires at noon. Additional statements could be issued if fog persists longer than expected.
