Sitka, Alaska – Snow is stacking up across the central Panhandle overnight, and road conditions could deteriorate quickly before the Tuesday morning commute as heavier bands move inland.

According to the National Weather Service in Juneau, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 3 p.m. Tuesday for Sitka, Petersburg Borough and western Kupreanof and Kuiu islands. Additional snow totals between 2 and 10 inches are expected, with amounts hinging on how quickly warmer air changes snow to rain Tuesday. A slower changeover could push totals toward the higher end.

Roads in Sitka and Petersburg may turn slushy and snow-packed before any transition to rain. Elevated and untreated routes will remain slick, and visibility could drop during heavier bursts.

Farther north, Yakutat is under a Winter Weather Advisory from 3 p.m. Tuesday through noon Wednesday, with 5 to 8 inches expected. If the heaviest snow band shifts east, totals there could climb even higher.

Light snow continues along the Icy Strait corridor south to Sumner Strait overnight, adding another 1 to 2 inches. Drivers should check Alaska 511 for updates and prepare for changing conditions through midweek as multiple systems track across the region.
