Baltimore, Md. – Slick bridges and overpasses could develop before sunrise Tuesday as temperatures hover near freezing and a new round of wintry precipitation moves into Maryland, northern Virginia and the District.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect overnight through Tuesday morning as a brief lull gives way to another wave of mixed precipitation. Surface temperatures are expected to dip between 28°F and 32°F, while warmer air several thousand feet above the ground supports a mix of light snow, sleet and freezing rain. The greatest risk for icy patches will develop between 2 a.m. and 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Roadways including I-95 from Baltimore to Washington, I-70 near Frederick, I-83 in Baltimore County, and I-81 near Hagerstown and Winchester could see reduced traction on elevated surfaces. Portions of the Capital Beltway (I-495) and I-66 in Northern Virginia may also experience slick conditions during the morning commute.

Untreated secondary roads, sidewalks and parking lots are most vulnerable, especially in western Maryland and the Shenandoah Valley where temperatures are expected to dip into the upper 20s. Commuters should allow extra travel time, reduce speeds and leave additional stopping distance. Pedestrians should use caution on icy walkways.

Conditions should gradually improve after 9 a.m. Tuesday as temperatures inch above freezing, but additional advisories could be issued if colder air lingers longer than expected.
