Binghamton, New York – A light glaze of ice could coat bridges and overpasses along Interstate 81 and New York Route 17 by 7 a.m. Tuesday, creating slick travel conditions during the morning commute across the Twin Tiers.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a wintry mix will develop Tuesday morning before gradually changing to rain in many lower elevations during the afternoon. Ice accumulations are expected to remain under 0.10 inch for most communities, but higher terrain in northeast Pennsylvania and the western Catskills could see up to 0.25 inch. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 7 a.m. Tuesday to 7 p.m. Tuesday for parts of Bradford, Susquehanna, Wyoming, Lackawanna and Luzerne counties in Pennsylvania, with additional advisories lasting until 3 a.m. Wednesday in Wayne, Pike, Delaware and Sullivan counties.

Snowfall totals will generally range from 1 to 2 inches across central New York, including areas near I-88, Cortland and Utica, before mixing with sleet or freezing rain. Temperatures will start in the upper teens to upper 20s at dawn Tuesday, then climb into the 30s and near 40 by late afternoon, helping transition precipitation to plain rain in valley locations such as Binghamton and Elmira.

Motorists on I-81, I-80 and US-11 should expect reduced traction, especially on untreated secondary roads and elevated surfaces. PennDOT and NYSDOT crews are expected to treat primary highways, but side streets may remain slick into the afternoon.

The icing threat will gradually ease late Tuesday as temperatures rise, though higher elevations could remain slippery into Tuesday night. Additional updates are likely if colder air lingers longer than expected.
