Albany, NY – Slippery roads could disrupt the Tuesday evening commute as snow and a light glaze of ice spread across eastern New York beginning late Tuesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Winter Weather Advisory takes effect between 9 a.m. and noon Tuesday and continues until 5 a.m. Wednesday for the Mohawk Valley, eastern Catskills, Litchfield Hills, Berkshires, southern Vermont and parts of the Lake George-Saratoga region. Snow totals of 1 to 2 inches are expected, along with ice accumulations ranging from 0.01 to 0.15 inches before precipitation changes to rain in some valley locations.

The greatest travel impacts are likely along Interstate 87, Interstate 90 and Interstate 88, where untreated bridges and overpasses could become slick by midafternoon. In Albany, Schenectady and Troy, snowfall rates may briefly reduce visibility below one mile during heavier bursts. Along the Taconic State Parkway and US-9, even minor ice buildup could create hazardous conditions on curves and elevated stretches.

Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing in parts of the Hudson Valley late Tuesday afternoon, allowing snow to mix with or change to rain. However, colder air will linger north and east of Albany, prolonging icy travel into the overnight hours.

Drivers should slow down, increase following distance and allow extra time for travel Tuesday afternoon and evening. Keep headlights on during reduced visibility and monitor updates for potential changes to advisories as the system moves through early Wednesday.
