Cleveland, OH – Drivers across Northeast Ohio could encounter slick bridges and overpasses after 2 a.m. Tuesday as temperatures hover near 32 degrees and light rain briefly freezes on contact.

According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, light rain will spread into the region late Monday night into Tuesday morning. A short window of patchy freezing rain is possible in Northeast Ohio and Northwest Pennsylvania before temperatures rise above freezing shortly after 2 a.m., limiting ice accumulation but increasing the risk for isolated slick spots.

The greatest concern includes Cleveland, Akron, Youngstown and areas east toward the Pennsylvania state line. Elevated roadways along Interstate 90, Interstate 71 and Interstate 77 are most vulnerable during the pre-dawn hours. Portions of the Ohio Turnpike (I-80) and I-480 could also see brief icy patches before pavement temperatures climb.

Any ice accumulation is expected to remain light, generally a glaze around 0.01 inch or less. Even that thin coating can create hazardous conditions on untreated surfaces, especially on ramps and secondary roads.

Motorists traveling before sunrise Tuesday should slow down, increase following distance and avoid sudden braking. Allow extra time for the morning commute and check for updated road conditions before heading out. Pedestrians should also use caution on sidewalks and parking lots.

Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing shortly after daybreak Tuesday, changing precipitation to plain rain and improving road conditions. Additional updates will be issued if colder air lingers longer than expected.
