South Bend, Indiana – A 47-year-old man has been charged in connection with a fatal alleyway assault on Kemble Avenue.

According to the South Bend Police Department, officers were called around 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, to the 2200 block of Kemble Avenue for a welfare check. Officers located a female victim inside a vehicle with severe injuries. A male was also found inside the vehicle but was not injured.

Police said the 35-year-old woman was unresponsive and suffering catastrophic injuries to her face and head. She was transported to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead after sustaining irreversible brain damage.

Through an investigation by the department’s Violent Crimes Unit, 47-year-old Dewayne Shurn Sr. was identified as the male found inside the vehicle and the suspect. The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office has charged Shurn with murder and a habitual offender enhancement in connection with the case.

Shurn is being held at the St. Joseph County Jail. He was arraigned this afternoon, and his next court date is scheduled for March 10.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

The investigation remains ongoing.
