Cobleskill, New York – Drivers across the eastern Catskills and Mohawk Valley should prepare for deteriorating road conditions beginning at 9 a.m. Tuesday, as snow develops and transitions to sleet and freezing rain ahead of the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 9 a.m. Tuesday until 3 a.m. Wednesday for southern Herkimer, southern Fulton, Montgomery, Schoharie and parts of Albany, Greene and Ulster counties. Snow accumulations could reach 2 inches before mixing with sleet and freezing rain, producing up to one tenth of an inch of ice.
Routes most vulnerable include Interstate 88 near Duanesburg, Route 28 through the Catskills, and Route 30 in the Mohawk Valley. Higher elevations around Windham, Hunter, Berne and Prattsville may hold onto freezing temperatures longer, allowing icy patches to persist into the overnight hours.
Drivers should reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance and prepare for slick bridges and untreated secondary roads. The heaviest impacts are expected late Tuesday afternoon through the evening drive.
Precipitation tapers off by early Wednesday morning, with the advisory set to expire at 3 a.m. Additional updates are possible if icing lingers overnight.
