Austin, Texas – Drivers along I-35 and MoPac will feel summer-like heat building this afternoon, with temperatures pushing 88 degrees before a sharp shift brings a 70 percent rain chance and wet roadways by Saturday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Austin-San Antonio, highs across Central Texas will climb well above seasonal averages through midweek. Austin is expected to peak near 88 degrees Tuesday, while San Antonio reaches 88 and Del Rio approaches 90. Overnight lows will remain unusually mild, holding in the mid to upper 60s, limiting relief for those without adequate cooling.
The heat expands region-wide through Friday. Uvalde could hit 92 degrees, Eagle Pass 91, and New Braunfels 87 to 88 degrees. Along I-10 from Seguin to San Antonio and west toward Kerrville, pavement temperatures will climb during peak afternoon traffic, increasing the risk of vehicle overheating and tire blowouts.
Rain chances begin increasing Wednesday and ramp up into the weekend. Austin carries a 30 percent chance Thursday, rising to 70 percent by Saturday and 65 percent Sunday. San Antonio’s rain probability climbs to 60 percent Saturday and 70 percent Sunday. Georgetown, Fredericksburg and areas along US-290 could see scattered downpours that briefly reduce visibility and create ponding on roadways.
Residents should hydrate, limit strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat, and check vehicles before extended travel. By the weekend, clear storm drains and avoid driving through water-covered roads, especially along low crossings near SH-71 and Loop 1604.
Warm conditions persist through Friday, with the first widespread rain chances arriving late Saturday. Additional updates are likely as moisture deepens across Central Texas heading into Sunday.
