Indianapolis, Ind. – A narrow but persistent snow band northwest of Indianapolis is dropping up to 2 inches of accumulation, slowing traffic along I-65, I-74 and I-70 through 9 a.m. Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a Winter Weather Advisory has been expanded to northwestern portions of central Indiana due to a moderate snow band that developed north and west of the metro. Snow totals will range from a trace to 2 inches, with the highest amounts expected along a corridor from Crawfordsville to Zionsville to Mt. Comfort. The advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m.

The heaviest bursts are reducing visibility and coating untreated roads, particularly along I-74 near Crawfordsville and Lebanon, and along I-65 north of downtown Indianapolis. On the east side, areas near Mt. Comfort along I-70 could see slick conditions during the early commute.

Road crews are actively treating highways, but secondary roads and ramps may remain snow-covered through midmorning. Even minor accumulations during peak travel hours can trigger crashes and delays, especially where snowfall rates briefly intensify.

Motorists should allow extra travel time, increase following distance and check Indiana 511 for real-time road conditions. Reduced visibility may occur in heavier bands, creating sudden slowdowns.

Snow intensity is expected to taper after sunrise, with gradual improvement by late morning as temperatures edge above freezing. Additional updates will be issued if the snow band shifts or persists longer than anticipated.
