Pittsburgh, Pa. – Drivers across western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia have a narrow window this morning before snow and ice begin freezing bridges and overpasses, especially along I-79, I-70 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike, with conditions deteriorating again by 10 p.m. Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 7 a.m. Monday through 4 a.m. Tuesday for the West Virginia ridges, including Tucker and Preston counties, where 2 to 4 inches of snow will accumulate. A second advisory begins at 10 p.m. Monday and runs until 10 a.m. Tuesday for the Laurel Highlands and north into Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, where up to a tenth of an inch of ice may coat elevated surfaces.

Statewide, the greatest snow totals will fall across eastern Tucker and Preston counties, impacting I-68 near Coopers Rock and U.S. 219. South of I-70, light snow up to 1 inch may create slick stretches during the morning commute in Washington, Greene and Fayette counties.

By late evening, attention shifts to freezing rain. A glaze to 0.10 inches of ice could develop along Route 422, I-80 near Clarion, and higher elevations east of Pittsburgh, including Somerset and Cambria counties. Even minor ice accumulation can snap tree limbs and trigger isolated power outages.

PennDOT and WVDOH crews are pre-treating major corridors, but officials urge drivers to slow down, allow extra stopping distance and avoid unnecessary travel after 10 p.m. Charge devices and prepare for brief outages where icing is heaviest.

Advisories remain in effect through Tuesday morning, and additional counties along and north of Route 422 could be added if icing expands overnight.
