Alaska’s central Panhandle is bracing for another surge of snowfall as moisture pushes in by midday, quickly covering roads in Sitka and across Prince of Wales Island. Snow intensifies through the afternoon, and travel conditions will deteriorate before evening.
The National Weather Service in Juneau has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Sitka, Western Kupreanof Island, and Kuiu Island from noon today until 9 a.m. Monday. Snow totals of 4 to 8 inches are expected. Prince of Wales Island and the City and Borough of Wrangell remain under an advisory until 6 a.m. Monday, where 5 to 9 inches could fall.
Heaviest snowfall rates develop this afternoon and continue into tonight. Roads in Sitka, Kake, Port Alexander, Craig, Klawock, and Wrangell may become snow-covered and slick. Upper elevations and the northern side of Prince of Wales Island could see the highest totals.
Cold northerly outflow winds strengthen across the northern inner channels while warmer southerly flow pushes north. That temperature clash may shift snow to a rain-snow mix by early Monday morning, then to plain rain by Monday afternoon as readings rise.
Travel could be very difficult, especially during the early Monday commute. Allow extra time, reduce speed, and check 511.alaska.gov for the latest road conditions. Prepare property and clear drains before heavier snowfall arrives.
This active March pattern continues, though temperatures are expected to moderate later in the week.
