St. Joseph, Missouri – Drivers across northwest Missouri and northeast Kansas have just hours before snow, sleet and light ice begin falling at 3 p.m. Sunday, creating slick highways ahead of the Monday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 3 p.m. Sunday until 9 a.m. Monday. Areas including Buchanan, Andrew, Holt and Nodaway counties in Missouri, along with Atchison and Doniphan counties in Kansas, could see up to 1 inch of combined snow and sleet, plus a light glaze of ice.

In St. Joseph, Maryville and Cameron, precipitation may begin as rain before transitioning to a wintry mix late afternoon. Roads, especially bridges along I-29, U.S. 36 and rural highways, may turn slick quickly after sunset as temperatures dip to freezing. Even a thin glaze can reduce traction significantly on untreated pavement.

Kansas drivers can check road conditions by calling 511, while Missouri motorists can monitor traveler.modot.org for live updates. Officials urge slower speeds and extra following distance through the evening and early Monday.

Precipitation should taper by midmorning Monday, but icy patches may linger beyond 9 a.m. if temperatures remain near freezing. Additional advisories could be issued if ice accumulation trends higher overnight.
