Burlington, VT – A sharp blast of Arctic air will send temperatures tumbling across Vermont and northern New York tonight, setting the stage for subzero lows and dangerous wind chills by Sunday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a strong Arctic high will build into the region through Monday, driving temperatures from mild afternoon readings into the single digits and teens by Sunday. By Sunday night, nearly the entire region will fall below zero, with the coldest Adirondack hollows plunging as low as 20 degrees below zero. Wind chills could approach -15°F to -20°F in exposed areas.

Statewide, the cold will grip communities from the Champlain Valley to the Northeast Kingdom. In Burlington and St. Albans, overnight lows will drop below zero by late Sunday, while Plattsburgh and Lake Placid could see even colder readings before daybreak Monday. A few light snow showers may brush southern Vermont Sunday morning, but accumulations will stay under an inch.

Drivers should watch for black ice, especially on bridges and untreated secondary roads. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Pets should not be left outside for extended periods.

The coldest air lingers into Monday morning before gradual moderation begins. Additional advisories could be issued if wind chills trend lower.
