Springfield, IL – Drivers across central Illinois could wake up to slick roads Monday morning as light snow spreads in Sunday night, with a small but notable ice risk south of Interstate 72.

According to the National Weather Service office in Lincoln, snow will likely expand across portions of central and southeast Illinois Sunday evening and continue through early Monday. Most areas are expected to see minor accumulations, generally under an inch, with the highest probabilities for measurable snow along and south of the I-74 corridor, including Peoria, Bloomington, Springfield and Decatur. Forecasters say there is a 20 to 30 percent chance of a trace of ice accumulation south of a Pittsfield to Mattoon line, which includes parts of Jacksonville, Effingham and communities near the Interstate 70 corridor.

While snowfall totals remain light, untreated roads, bridges and overpasses could become slippery overnight into the Monday morning commute. Temperatures are expected to hover near freezing before gradually warming after sunrise, which may allow some areas to transition to rain by late morning, especially in southeast Illinois.

Motorists should slow down, allow extra travel time and use caution on sidewalks and parking lots. Additional advisories could be issued if icing becomes more widespread overnight.
