Gaylord, Michigan – Snow will begin spreading across parts of northern Lower Michigan by 7 p.m. Saturday, with steady accumulation south of M-72 creating slick travel on U.S. 131 and M-32 before sunrise Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, scattered snow showers will continue through the day, especially across eastern Upper Michigan, before a more organized area of light snow develops this evening. The steadiest snowfall is expected south of M-72, including areas near Grayling, Houghton Lake and West Branch.

Widespread totals of 1 to 3 inches are possible between 7 p.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. Sunday. Farther north, including Sault Ste. Marie and Drummond Island, lighter lake effect snow showers may persist overnight with minor additional accumulation.

Road conditions may deteriorate quickly after sunset as temperatures fall into the teens and single digits. Snow-covered pavement and reduced visibility are likely along I-75, U.S. 31 and U.S. 131. Untreated rural roads could become slippery within minutes of steadier snowfall.

Clouds linger into Sunday with chilly highs mainly in the teens and 20s. Overnight lows in eastern Upper Michigan may drop below zero, increasing the risk of refreezing on any wet surfaces.

Drivers should slow down during evening travel, allow extra stopping distance and check MDOT updates before heading out. Additional statements could be issued if snowfall rates increase or lake effect bands shift overnight Saturday.
