Buffalo, New York – Drivers across western New York could encounter slick stretches on I-90 and Route 33 before sunrise Sunday as light snow develops overnight and temperatures plunge into the teens.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a cold front will sweep west to east early Saturday, followed by a period of light snow late Saturday night into early Sunday morning. Minor accumulations ranging from a dusting to 2 inches are possible, with the higher end most likely across higher terrain and areas south of Buffalo.
While snowfall totals remain modest, falling temperatures will create a flash-freeze risk on untreated roads. Lows are expected to drop between 17 and 21 degrees overnight, allowing moisture from earlier rain showers to refreeze. Elevated surfaces along I-190, the Kensington Expressway and bridges over the Niagara River could turn slick within minutes after snow begins.
Lake effect snow showers may linger into Sunday morning, particularly across southern Erie County, Chautauqua County and along the I-86 corridor near Jamestown. Even light bursts could briefly reduce visibility and coat roadways.
Sunday afternoon brings colder air, with highs struggling to reach the lower 20s in Buffalo and even colder readings across the North Country. Wind chills will make it feel even colder for anyone heading to early church services or weekend travel.
Motorists should slow down, increase following distance and check 511NY for updated road conditions before departing late Saturday night or early Sunday. Additional statements may be issued if snow bands intensify or shift farther north.
