Grand Junction, Colorado – Temperatures running up to 15 degrees above normal will push afternoon highs into the 50s and 60s along Interstate 70 through 6 p.m. Friday, accelerating snowmelt and increasing runoff near road shoulders before mountain snow returns late Saturday. Drivers traveling between Grand Junction and Glenwood Springs should prepare for changing conditions within 36 hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, quiet and warm weather will hold across western Colorado through Friday and much of Saturday. Highs will climb 10 to 15 degrees above seasonal averages in the lower elevations, including Grand Junction and Montrose. By late Saturday night, a moisture surge will spread into the northern and central mountains, bringing light snow mainly above 8,000 feet.
The first impacts are expected along I-70 near Vail Pass and along US-40 near Steamboat Springs after 8 p.m. Saturday. While accumulations appear light, even 1 to 3 inches could create slick stretches on mountain passes by early Sunday. Aspen and higher elevations along CO-82 may also see light snow, especially on shaded roadways and bridges.
Motorists should use daylight hours Friday and Saturday to prepare for winter travel conditions at elevation. Check CDOT road reports before crossing mountain passes, carry traction devices and allow extra travel time overnight Saturday.
Warm valley conditions will persist into Sunday afternoon, but mountain snow showers may linger through midday. Additional advisories could be issued if snowfall rates increase or lower elevations begin to see accumulation.
