Wakefield, Virginia – Patchy fog early Friday morning is reducing visibility to near one-quarter mile in spots along I-64 and US-460, with conditions expected to improve by 9 a.m.

Drivers across southeast Virginia and northeast North Carolina, including areas near Richmond, Petersburg and the Hampton Roads region, should be prepared for sudden changes in visibility during the morning commute. Low-lying areas and rural stretches of highway may experience the thickest fog before gradual clearing after sunrise.

Any lingering light rain today will mainly affect southeast Virginia and northeast North Carolina, though minimal additional rainfall is expected. Skies will trend drier through the afternoon with highs reaching the upper 40s to mid-50s inland and slightly cooler along the coast.

Mild and dry weather is forecast for Saturday, with afternoon temperatures climbing into the mid-40s to near 50 degrees. Sunday remains relatively mild, especially inland where highs could reach the upper 60s to near 70 degrees. However, increasing clouds are expected ahead of a backdoor cold front set to move through late Sunday.

This front will usher in cooler temperatures and could set the stage for a period of unsettled weather early next week, including the potential for some wintry precipitation Monday into Tuesday.

Motorists are encouraged to use low-beam headlights in fog, allow extra travel time and remain alert for damp or slick patches early today. Additional forecast updates will refine early next week’s cooling trend and any precipitation chances.
