Paducah, Kentucky – Southwest wind gusts up to 20 mph combined with humidity levels dipping as low as 25 percent are creating elevated fire danger across western Kentucky, including areas along I-24 and I-69, through 6 p.m. Friday.

The National Weather Service in Paducah warns that dry vegetation and mild temperatures near 68 degrees will allow fires to ignite and spread more easily this afternoon. The greatest concern stretches from Paducah and Mayfield to communities near Madisonville and Hopkinsville, especially in open fields and wooded areas near major roadways.

Drivers along US-60 and I-55 should avoid tossing cigarettes from vehicles, as even small sparks could quickly ignite roadside grasses. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents are urged to delay debris burning until conditions improve. Equipment that produces heat or sparks, including chainsaws and welding tools, should be used with caution.

While winds are not as strong as in recent severe fire weather events, the combination of dry air and steady southwest breezes increases the likelihood that any fire could spread beyond its point of origin. Fire officials stress that prevention is critical during the peak heating hours of the afternoon.

Warm and dry weather will persist into Saturday before a cold front moves through the region Sunday, bringing cooler temperatures and a return to wet conditions. Rain chances increase early next week, which may help ease fire concerns.

Until humidity levels recover and winds diminish later this evening, residents across the Paducah region should remain vigilant and report any signs of smoke immediately.
